IP Champion
The intellectual property (IP) champion has an overall responsibility to set the IP direction for the stream, consistent with PCP's IP strategy and competitive positioning.
Description
The overall aim is to make sure that PCP builds a patent portfolio that addresses solutions to market-related needs identified in the PCP business strategy.
The stream IP champion(s) will already have a role within the development process (e.g. architect, product owner). The objective of the IP champion role is to ensure that IP is kept in focus during the routine requirements management and backlog grooming processes.
This involves identifying and documenting the focus areas for IP protection in the system stream. These focus areas are dependent on the type of IP assets required to maintain the competitive advantage.
The focus areas should also take a relatively long-term perspective, covering several increments. The selection of the focus areas should consider:
- PCP IP strategy.
- Competitive positioning.
- Freedom to operate.
- Standardization (including customer initiatives).
The stream IP champion supports the system development by defining the IP direction, stimulating invention harvesting activities, and planning IP activities as part of the agile planning process.
Responsibilities
- Update IP roadmap.
- Work with team members to identify focus areas for IP protection.
- Document and communicate IP direction to the team.
- Communicate IP aspects in the increment planning events, participate in pre-planning, demos, and inspect-and-adapt meetings (retrospectives).
- Stimulate invention disclosures.
- Identify the need for an IP workshop (regular cadence / as required).
- Promote IP culture and awareness in the team.
- Identify system requirements with IP relevance.
- Define IP epics and features in agile planning.
- Prioritize and schedule IP epics & features in increments according to the roadmap and release priorities.
