Reference: What is an Approved Manufacturer List (AML)?
The AML is the Approved manufacturer list. It is a list of electronic components, PCB, mechanical parts and labels, which are all approved by ABB PA PCP.
Intended for
- Hardware engineer working with 800xA, Advant and Combitrol & Combimatic.
Overview
MPN: Manufacturer part number. Each suppliers own number. PCN (product change notics) and PDN (product discontinuation notice) are made by suppliers on MPN level. The approval of suppliers and pricing discussions are handled by Procurement and Logistics team. The same MPN can be associated to several CPN.
CPN: Customer Part number. This is the ABB specific number that we give a set of requirements on a component. Both custom and purchased.
AML/AVL: Approved Manufacturerer list or Approved Vendor list. Consists of all CPNs and their associated MPNs. BOM: Bill of material is extracted at the CPN level. Thus this contains the CPN and the associated MPN.
Example of a CPN with associated MPNs
The AML includes the internal ABB Identity number (CPN) with a description and the relationship to the manufacturer and their part no (MPN). The AML is owned by ABB PA PCP.
Example:
CPN | Description | Manufacturer | MPN |
---|---|---|---|
7PCA550071E1 | RE_FIX:MF.01*125mW49R9 | ARCOL STACKPOLE | APC1206T49R9Z RNCF1206TKY49R9 |
How to create a CPN
Within ABB there is a standardized way of creating a CPN number and its description. The CPN is a storage container for several MPN.
- This is dictated by the "Process Control Platform Classification by Identity Numbers for Purchased Articles", 3BSE000002 found in this folder. However as a CPN might be in use for a long time there might be for historic reasons CPNs that do not match this format.
- The description is written based on the rules in "Rules for component description", 3BHT460006 found in this folder
The CPN can then be populated with associated MPN numbers. The CPN is a container of MPN.
Updating the AML
Reasons to make changes in the AML can be the following
- new CPN, introduction of new component
- to add or remove Manufacturers and MPNs for an existing CPN
The AML is a list that contains all CPNs and the MPNs. Meaning that this list contains the approved manufacturers and the approved product numbers. The AML is updated when a new CPN is added or when we need to add or remove an MPN from a CPN.
: All MPNs are connected to at least one CPN but each CPN can have multiple MPN.
If there is only a single MPN on a certain CPN then it is called a Single source component because there is only one approved manufacturer for this component. This is also true for when all MPNs are sourced from a single manufacturer (i.e. two different series of capacitors, but both are from same manufacturer). Single sources should be avoided whenever possible for reliable sourcing. There can also be manufactures that should never be used as single sources but they are okay to use if there is a second option. Please check with the P&L team for this kind of information. The AML is stored in the document management system. All issues that affect the AML must be tracked for traceability. The component engineer logs all issues in the "CPN update log", 3BSE084384 found in this folder.
Distribution of the AML
The AML is distributed once a month (manual update by component engineer). The AML is uploaded on the site “ABB PCP Supplier Collaboration Portal”. Once the upload has been made an automatic email is sent to several EMS. If there is an urgent issue of addition or removal of an MPN, the change of the actual AML row is distributed immediately.
- stored in the document management system. For internal use.
- distributed on the site ABB PCP Supplier Collaboration Portal. For external parties.
All the concerned EMS get information by mail when an update is available. If there is an urgent issue of addition or removal of an MPN, the change of the actual AML row is distributed immediately. The component engineer is responsible for maintaining and distributing the AML.
